Animals with unrestricted growth wipe themselves out by overpopulation and eventual resource exhaustion and ecosystem destruction. Humans are so adaptable that almost every part of the planet has become our habitat. As a result, the entire planet is at risk of being exhausted of resources. I believe that terraforming, altering a planet to support human life, and resource management would be well-understood by any “intelligent” species that has managed to survive without destroying itself.
For a species to survive long-term it needs to live in balance with the ecosystem in which it resides. Humans have a very short life-span, 50-100 years with a wide-variance due to individual lifestyles and environments. Because we are short-lived and animals concerned with self-preservation if the community isn’t threatened, we, as a species, haven’t developed a great understanding of how to maintain the environment on a planet-wide scale. Creating habitable environments and managing resource consumption needs to be understood by every member of the species so that, as a species, we can make intelligent and effective decisions. Move people out of harsh areas and potentially CHANGE those areas into places that can easily sustain life.
The same universal patterns exist in every part of the universe, and the closer to that pattern we structure ourselves, the more likely we are to remain existing in that pattern. Structure our society like a living creature; each individual cell has all the cellular components. Communities should rely on local environments for self-sustenance as much as possible; If too much of your needs for survival are supplied by other areas, the deterioration of those supply lines means that community will suffer and eventually die or be abandoned. Every community should have a self-produced source of food and water, energy production, all the necessary components for a population to survive.
Cells are in constant communication with surrounding cells and, if they lose this ability to communicate and respond to the cells around them, they might become cancer cells (lookup intercellular communication). Communities need to be constantly communicating with nearby communities to have a clear understanding of the current state of resources so that disastrous lack of resources can be avoided.
A population must continuously maintain it’s habitat otherwise it will destroy the habitat.
